FAQs and Considerations when planning your project

What is is the difference between filled and outlined fonts?

 Filled Fonts

  • Description: Filled fonts are solid, meaning the entire shape of each letter is fully engraved or "filled in" with the laser. The laser removes material or marks the surface across the whole area of the letter, creating a bold, solid appearance.
  • Appearance: The letters look thick and uniform, with no empty spaces within their shapes (e.g., an "O" would be a solid ring rather than just its outline).
  • Laser Process: The laser rasters (scans back and forth) over the entire area of the font, burning or etching the material to create a consistent depth or color change.
  • Use Cases: Filled fonts are ideal for designs where readability and high contrast are important, such as signage, branding on products, or deep engravings on materials like wood, metal, or acrylic.
  • Pros:
    • Bold and highly visible.
    • Works well for larger text sizes.
  • Cons:
    • Takes more time and laser power due to the larger engraved area.
    • Fine details may be lost in smaller text sizes.

Outline Fonts

  • Description: Outline fonts (also called single-line or vector fonts) consist of just the outer edges of the letters. The laser traces only the perimeter of each character, leaving the interior empty.
  • Appearance: The letters appear as thin, hollow shapes (e.g., an "O" would be a ring with an unengraved center).
  • Laser Process: The laser follows a vector path to engrave or cut along the outline of the text. This is typically faster than rastering because it only marks the edges.
  • Use Cases: Outline fonts are great for intricate designs, smaller text, or when a lighter, more delicate look is desired. They’re often used on materials like glass, leather, or thin metal where precision is key.
  • Pros:
    • Faster engraving time and lower power usage.
    • Cleaner look for small or detailed text.
  • Cons:
    • Less bold, so it may not stand out as much on some surfaces.
    • Can be harder to read from a distance.

What if I want to include handwriting or graphics in my creation?

Any of the graphics that you see in our gallery or product pages can be incorporated into your creation with a little planning.  Bear in mind that the surface area is small and some detail will be lost, particularly in complex images.  We reserve the right to charge a setup fee of a minimum of $5.00, possibly more depending on the work involved, for complex images or Raster files that require extensive cleanup when rendering to Vector for the laser path.  As an example graphics with clear and simple lines and curves work best while photographs require the most work.  Given the surface area of our products, detailed images are discouraged.

  • Please take the surface area and curvature of the piece into account when planning your creation.  As an example, a bracelet is curved into an arc and when bent, only the top portion will be visible when your hand is placed flat.  You may want to consider wrapping the text to two lines to keep the text visible.
  • Please make sure to provide an email address when you submit your order and look for the proof we will be sending for your approval prior to the product's production.

Any sample handwriting or simple graphic can be incorporated into any of our pieces.  Below are supported graphics formats.

  • Raster images: PNG, JPG, JPEG, BMP, GIF, TIF.
  • Vector files: SVG, DXF, PDF.

How do I care for stainless steel jewelry?

  • Stainless steel is hypo-allergenic and will not tarnish.  Wipe clean.

How do I care for copper and brass jewelry?

Over time, copper and brass jewelry can develop a natural patina or tarnish due to exposure to air, moisture, and oils from your skin. Fortunately, cleaning and restoring their shine is simple with a few household items. Here’s a quick guide:

  1. Mild Soap and Water Method
    • Mix a small amount of gentle dish soap with warm water.
    • Soak your copper or brass jewelry in the solution for a few minutes.
    • Use a soft cloth or a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently scrub away dirt or tarnish.
    • Rinse thoroughly with clean water and dry completely with a soft, lint-free cloth to prevent water spots.

  1. Lemon and Salt Polish
    • Cut a lemon in half and sprinkle a pinch of table salt onto the cut side.
    • Rub the lemon directly onto the copper or brass piece, using the salt as a mild abrasive to lift tarnish.
    • Rinse with water and dry thoroughly with a soft cloth for a restored shine.

  1. Vinegar and Salt Soak
    • Combine equal parts white vinegar and water in a bowl, then add a teaspoon of salt.
    • Submerge your jewelry in the mixture and let it sit for 10-15 minutes.
    • Gently scrub with a soft cloth or brush if needed, then rinse and dry completely.

Tips for Maintenance

  • Avoid harsh chemicals or abrasive scrubbers, as they can scratch the metal.
  • Store your jewelry in a dry place, ideally in an airtight bag or with anti-tarnish strips, to slow down oxidation.
  • Polish sparingly to preserve the natural beauty and patina, if desired.
